Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) is one of the most widely produced and utilized industrial chemicals in the world. It is a strong mineral acid known for its high acidity, oxidizing properties, and dehydrating ability. Sulfuric acid is commonly produced in concentrations of ninety-three to ninety-eight percent (93–98%) or in fuming form known as oleum.

The chemical plays a vital role in fertilizer production, chemical manufacturing, metal processing, mining, petroleum refining, textile production, and lead-acid battery manufacturing. Due to its extensive industrial applications, sulfuric acid consumption is often regarded as an indicator of a country’s industrial development.

Sulfuric acid is mainly produced from elemental sulfur, pyrite ore, or sulfur-rich gases from metal smelters. Modern production plants use the Contact Process, particularly the Double Contact Double Absorption (DCDA) technology, which ensures high conversion efficiency, low emissions, and improved energy recovery.

Globally, demand for sulfuric acid continues to grow due to increasing fertilizer production, mining activities, and industrial expansion. In Nigeria, sulfuric acid is widely used in fertilizer blending, battery production, metal treatment, and mining operations. However, local production remains limited, resulting in significant dependence on imports.

Nigeria possesses strong potential for local sulfuric acid production due to the availability of sulfur-bearing minerals, expanding industrial activities, and increasing domestic demand. Establishing local production facilities would reduce import dependence, conserve foreign exchange, support industrialization, and create employment opportunities.
